... I was hoping to start a conversation on here.

I have a children's book I need to illustrate, and I'm having trouble getting started.  It's a great story by a kid in my aftercare class.  She wrote it, I want to illustrate it, and then I hope to download it somewhere that I can make an actual book out of it as a gift for her.

But I'm having trouble figuring out the process.  Any ideas?  So far, I typed it into a word program, print out clean sheets, and tried to draw sketches on them.  It isn't working too well.

I could use some help!

Susyluwho, I did a children's book. First I wrote it. Then I drew the sketches (I decided how many sketches I would generally need per verse...it was a poem). Then I scanned each drawing and placed them in separate Word Documents, placing the wording around the pictures. Then I printed them out on a thick white (flyer?) paper. Then I took the stacks to staples and had them bound. They did a GREAT job on the binding and the cover. Originally I was going to have them print the whole book, but their printer didn't give me the exact look I was going for. Does this help?

Yes, this is very helpful. I think I've been going about it in the wrong way -- the words keep getting in the way of the drawings I want to do. I'm going to take a photo of one of the pages of words, just to show you how creative this kid is with writing... it's a hysterical story!

I look forward to it...I would love to help in any way I can too! :-))) I have to say, the hardest (or most time-consuming) part of creating my book was not the sketching (although it took me about 4 months!), but the layout. It is a pain in the ear! But when you're done - aaahhhh, the satisfaction! Keep me posted!

Email me the story, I'd like to read it. Maybe you should do the pictures first, scan them into the computer then place them where you want them to appear in the text. I have been doing that with your blog to print it out and maybe I can help.

“I Just Wanna Have Some Fun!” Rita Hardley was the butler of a very rich, wealthy family. The Rockers family was all about money! Money was their life. Living in a mansion was wicked awesome, but having no fun at all was extremely boring. Rita was all about having a great time, but whenever she tried to have fun…. BOOM! At least one member of the Rockers family would stop her. Whenever Rita tried to throw a massive party when the family was out, the awesome, wonderful fun would become boring as school… well, maybe a little less boring than SCHOOL. Rita tried to make chores a lot more fun, like when she played basketball with all the dirty dishes. She brought all the plates outside by the fifteen foot tall basketball hoop, and tried to throw all the dishes into the hoop, hoping the dirty dirt would fall off onto the ground. GOOD TIMES, GOOD TIMES! Rita hoped to quit, but she wanted the money and thought that living in a very big, expensive mansion was a once in a lifetime chance. But would Rita ever have a chance to have big fun like a kid again? Hopefully, she would. On a beautiful, bright sunny morning, the eight kids of the big family were playing catch with an egg… I think it’s called Egg Toss. Roger, the fourth kid in the family, had to take a three hour shower because he got smothered in that yellow stuff called yolk. Rita though that it looked mad fun! “You know what, Rita, I’m going to go out there and have some fun in life,” Rita said to herself courageously. Rita tip-toed in to the living room where Mr. Ricky Rocker was having a cup of warm coffee and reading the newspaper. …to be continued…

Ok, that was the first page of the story. It's written by a child, and from a child's perspective, but I love it. Whaddya think???
